How a simple leak detector helped one family prevent kitchen damage before the holidays
We received this story last week from Jennifer R., a homeowner in Oregon who shared how a subtle leak almost ruined her kitchen cabinets—right before the holidays.
“I Thought It Was Just Humidity”
“About two weeks ago, I started noticing a faint musty smell under our kitchen sink.
I assumed it was just from storing damp sponges or maybe some older cleaning supplies. The cabinet floor looked dry, so I didn't think much of it.
But then I noticed the wood at the very back was starting to warp slightly. No puddle. No drip I could see. Just that smell and a bit of swelling.”
A Leak That Comes and Goes
Jennifer checked the pipes and wiped everything down. It looked fine.
“I thought maybe it was a spill or just old house stuff.
But the smell kept coming back—especially after running the dishwasher.”
That's when she decided to try something different: placing a small under-sink leak detector near the back corner of the cabinet.
The Alert Came the Next Day
“We ran the dishwasher that night as usual. I forgot about the sensor—until I got a phone notification during cleanup.
It said: 'Water detected in Kitchen – Left Cabinet.' I opened the door and sure enough, the detector was sitting in a thin, invisible puddle.”
Turns out the dishwasher drain hose had a tiny crack that only leaked under pressure. It wasn’t visible, and the water would evaporate quickly—but it was enough to start damaging the wood and invite mold.
A Small Device, a Big Save
Jennifer had installed the AquaNet-BD water valve just the day before. It caught the leak early enough that no repair was needed—just a quick hose replacement.
“We probably saved our cabinets. And with the holidays coming, I can’t imagine dealing with water damage right now.”
Smart Prevention You Don't Have to Think About
Jennifer has since added a second detector behind the washer and plans to connect her leak sensors to a smart shutoff valve next.
“I like that it just works quietly. I didn’t even remember it was there until it sent the alert. Honestly, I think every kitchen should have one.”
Stop Leaks Before They Become Disasters
Not every leak starts with a puddle. Sometimes, the first sign is a smell. Or warped wood. Or a sudden spike in your water bill.
Whether it’s under the sink, behind the washer, or near your water heater, leak detection doesn’t have to be complicated—or expensive.
